New system installationfrom €8,000Depends on the system type, site conditions and ground works needed.

What installation covers

A full installation replaces or adds a septic tank or wastewater treatment system: the tank or unit itself, the percolation or polishing filter area it drains to, and the pipework connecting it to your house. It is usually triggered by a failed inspection, a new build, or a system that has reached the end of its working life.

How the process works

  1. Site assessment and percolation test, if one has not already been done — see our percolation test and site assessment page
  2. System recommendation based on your site, soil and household size
  3. A written quote covering the tank or unit, drainage area works and connection
  4. Installation, then sign-off and any paperwork needed for your records

What to check before you choose an installer

  • Confirm they carry public liability insurance and can show evidence of it
  • Ask whether the quote includes the drainage/percolation area, not just the tank
  • Check whether a grant applies to your situation — grant-funded work generally needs a failed-inspection letter and approval before work starts, not after
  • Ask what happens if the site assessment finds ground conditions that change the recommended system

Common questions

How long does an installation take?

It depends on the system and ground works required. Straightforward replacements are usually quicker than a new percolation area on a difficult site. We will give you a realistic timeline once we have seen the site assessment.

Do I need planning permission?

Often not for a like-for-like replacement, but it depends on your site and system. Check with Cork County Council if you are unsure, especially for a new build or a different system type.

Can I get the grant for a new installation?

The grant applies after a failed inspection, covering 85% up to €12,000, and needs approval before work starts. See our grant page for the full route.

What is the difference between installation and replacement?

They usually mean the same thing in practice — replacing or installing a system where one did not work before. See our replacement cost page for a cost breakdown.
