What the letter means
After an inspection, the council writes to tell you whether your system passed. If it failed, the letter (an advisory notice) sets out what needs to be fixed and by when.
Common reasons for failing
- The tank hasn't been emptied or maintained
- A cracked or leaking tank
- A percolation area that has failed or was never installed
- Surface water or roof water running into the system
- The system is too close to a well or stream

Does a failed inspection guarantee a grant?

What paperwork should I keep?
Keep the council notice, agreed quotation, invoices and completion records together. Check with the council whether another inspection is needed and what documents they require.

Will I be fined?
The letter gives you time to fix the problem. What matters is acting on it before the deadline.
Do I have to replace the whole system?
Not always. Sometimes emptying, a repair or a new percolation area is enough. It depends on what failed.
Can I get help with the cost?
Eligible work may qualify for 85% of approved costs, up to €12,000. The council must confirm your eligibility and approve the work first.
