How often should a septic tank be emptied?
Most domestic septic tanks need emptying every 1–3 years. It depends on the size of the tank and how many people live in the house.
Signs your tank needs emptying
- Sinks, showers or toilets draining slowly
- Gurgling in the pipes
- A sewage smell near the tank or in the garden
- Wet or very green ground over the tank or percolation area
- More than 2 years since it was last emptied
What happens on the day
We need clear access to the tank lid for the tanker hose. We empty the tank, check the inlet and outlet, and tell you if anything looks wrong. Keep the receipt: it helps show the tank is maintained if it is ever inspected.
Is emptying covered by the grant?
No. Routine emptying and servicing are not covered by the septic tank grant. The grant is only for repairs or replacement after a failed council inspection. See the grant scheme details.
